my ruler (using inches) shows “0 1’8” 3’4" 5’0" etc"
I want to see “0 20 40 60 etc”
I’ve done this before but I can’t remember how I did it. Something about type of dimension or something. Please let me know how.

I Agree - but you don’t have to do that when you use QCAD ability’s for your advantage …
How?
Start your drawing in “Foot” to draw the map for the acres. If it then comes down to “smaller” things like buildings etc. convert the drawing to “Inch” below “Menu / Edit / Convert Drawing”. Converting a drawing means QCAD will scale everything inclusive dimensioning according to the new unit.
Note: Don’t change just the unit below "Drawing Preferences / Drawing Unit - that will only change …
For the current drawing: Edit menu .. Drawing preferences (Ctrl+I)
