I have a drawing with a model space and paper space. I designed it on my laptop, but now am on a desktop, and qCad core dumps/crashes on each load.

How can I capture a crash log to upload here?

Typically you start QCAD from the OS command line and stream its output to a log file.
There are example instructions on the forum.
Something like: qcad.exe 1>log.txt 2>&1

Kinda functional when QCAD is not installed in the Program Files folder on Windows and the current path is already the installation path.
Otherwise you need to include the full path for the exe and log file.
Note that the ‘Program Files’ folder is protected by the Windows UAC.
You probably can not write the log there.
Also note the space in ‘Program Files’ meaning that the path must be between double quotes.

As always, the file would be most helpful.

I have tried this without result so far. Any more tips?

PS C:\Program Files\QCAD> .\qcad.exe 1> c:\log_qcad.txt 2>&1

The log_qcad file is created after the crash, but is zero bytes long.

I don’t think Windows has a decent way to capture crash logs.

Did you try resetting your desktop QCAD to defaults?

Is there an available instrumented version of qCad that can capture something. (Note there are libraries for automated crash log collection, and windows does send crashes to Microsoft, for whatever black box purpose).

No, unfortunately, QCAD has no such feature.

Is there a way to dump settings, test with defaults,
then restore settings to see if the problem returns (and is thus related to settings)?

or something like “qcad --default-settings”

to allow testing without distributing the current failure test case?

Yes, you can reset your QCAD configuration as described here:

Instead of deleting QCAD3.ini, you can simply backup or rename it and later restore it if desired.
